The Best 5 Golf Courses in Washington 2018

Are you looking for the best golf course in Washington, USA? Look no further! We’ve collated the top 5 Golf courses for you here!

#1 Sahalee Country Club

The Sahalee Country Club is a private golf course and country club in the northwest United States, located in Sammamish, Washington, a suburb east of Seattle.

Sahalee was first envisioned in 1965, when two separate groups of golf club members - one from Inglewood Country Club, the other from Broadmoor Golf Club - decided concurrently that the greater Seattle area was in need of another championship golf course. Sahalee has held 98 PGA Championship, the NEC World Golf Championship in 2002, the USGA Senior Open in 2010 and hosted the 2016 KPMG Women's PGA Championship.

This all weather, year round course is characteristically Northwest with majestic Douglas fir, red cedar and hemlock trees lining its narrow fairways. Sahalee's 27-holes consist of three 9-hole courses of equal caliber (the North, South and East course), any two of which can be combined to a standard 18-hole course. This arrangement eliminates the need for call-ahead starting times and promotes greater freedom of play for all members.

#2 Gamble Sands

Gamble Sands is a public golf course in Brewster, WA. The concept of Gamble Sands began with the vision of a high-end, Pacific Northwest destination resort community highlighted by a variety of outdoor recreational activities.

Overlooking the Columbia River, in the high desert of North Central Washington, Gamble Sands is blessed with one of the most dramatic settings for true links golf in the world. In fact, golf course designer, David McLay Kidd described the location as a “once in a lifetime site that every designer dreams of.”

The mission at Gamble Sands was to build a golf course that was just as playable as Bandon Dunes. Kidd wanted good golfers to stand on the tee with confidence and see opportunity, all the while ensuring the average player never lost a ball. The fairways are huge, and the views are even bigger.

“This is the once in a lifetime site every golf designer dreams of, rolling sand dunes overlooking a large body of water, a developer willing to build golf just for the love of the game,” said Kidd. “It’s just golf on sand, golf as it was truly meant to be.”

The course invites aggressive play with 115 acres of grass that is visually stunning, yet not intimidating. The Sands course more than any other exemplifies David’s early work at Bandon Dunes.

#3 Tumble Creek Golf Course

Tumble Creek Golf Club is a private golf course, for members only in Cle Elum, WA. It has been named one of the top private courses in America by Golf Digest.

Infamous Golf Designer Tom Doak is the architect of this course. He is recognized as one of the finest living golf course designers in the world. Golf Digest ranked three of his courses (Pacific Dunes at Bandon Dunes, Cape Kidnappers, and Barnbougle) among the top 50 in the world in 2005.

With Tumble Creek, Tom Doak has captured the spirit of its rolling hills that flow through pine forests, along river bluffs, and across expansive meadows ringed by soaring peaks. Known as a minimalist designer, Doak "found" the course in the land and moved as little earth as possible creating this extraordinary Cle Elum golf course. The realization of Doak's artistry and vision have created a legacy for Tumble Creek Club members for generations to come.

#4 Chambers Bay

Chambers Bay is a public golf course in the northwest United States, located in University Place, Washington, on Puget Sound southwest of Tacoma.

The area first found use as a rock quarry stemming as far back as the Steilacoom Indian Tribe and the first European settlers in 1832. Over the years the Chambers Creek Properties area has been used for varied purposes before becoming a world class 18-hole championship golf course.

The course is classified as a 'Links" course.

True traditional links courses, including Chambers Bay, share several geographic characteristics:

  • A links course is built along a major body of water
  • A links course usually has very few trees, if any
  • A links course resides on sandy soil that drains easily
  • A links course has a natural open layout where the native landscape, wind, and rain play a major factor
  • A links course features ground contours that provide remarkable inherent undulations and slopes in the fairways and greens
  • A links course rarely has any internal water features
  • A links course’s rough areas feature pure seaside grasses

Many golfers love the challenge of a links course, traversing the rugged dunes and experiencing the natural seaside beauty. It's a very different game to that played on an inland course that's for sure.
